Since I live in a rural area, getting to any library is difficult. It has been a great success on trips (no more carrying 2-3 heavy books in the carry on) & great for the budget (free books to download). The only downside of a Kindle - it's not a very good fly swatter (my sister used her to swat a bug & had to buy a new Kindle).Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4655771233639274287.post-13941496802405168752012-05-26T19:26:00.272-07:002012-05-26T19:26:00.272-07:00I don't have any of the items mentioned above ...I don't have any of the items mentioned above either but have been thinking of getting an IPAD. I've been getting them as e-books which I used to read on my laptop. However, I'm starting to have a problem with dry eyes, and reading on a computer screen irritates them. So I got the Kindle Touch, Wii-Fi, with ads. Its screen is very easy to read. Its menus are very easy to navigate. It's very easy to look up unknown words in the dictionary with the Kindle Touch. (I read that it's a little awkward to do that on the regular Kindle.) Since I have Wii-Fi at home I decided that I wouldn't need the 3G model. Perhaps I would have gotten that if I were the sort of person who has to do a lot of traveling. The ads are not intrusive at all. They never show while you're reading. So I'm glad I saved $30 by choosing the ad option.

You can't read the Kindle Touch in a dark room, but I would find using a glowing screen (such as an iPad, a computer screen, or a Kindle Fire) in darkness to be hard on the eyes anyway. So I am content to read my Kindle in good lighting just like a real book. I hope I'm in time for your give-away, but if not, I still wanted to tell you how much I am enjoying my Kindle Touch.

P.S. Don't forget to buy a power adapter. It isn't included with the Kindle, though you can use the included USB cable to charge through your computer. However, it's faster to charge using the power adapter.Catholic Bibliophagisthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10697706672495544901noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4655771233639274287.post-48982248683610301432012-05-26T17:32:33.613-07:002012-05-26T17:32:33.613-07:00Today our local library had Kindle Fire, Kindle ke...Today our local library had Kindle Fire, Kindle keyboard, and Nook available for us to compare the differences. A couple of the librarians have Nook Color as their personal e-readers and spoke very highly of it. I liked the size of the Kindle Fire but unsure about reading with the backlit screen, although it can be adjusted. I'm planning to check Consumer Reports and see what they have found on e-readers. ANYWAY ... my dilema was answered when my retirement party (complete surprise to me) resulted in my all my bosses collecting $$ and gifting me with a Kindle DX. Love, love, love that thing. It has WiFi and I am fortunate enough to be part of a library system that has e-books you can download ... how cool is that! I also own an iPad which is nice for the WiFi part but I haven't downloaded a book app yet so no help there. There are LOTS of free books out there on Amazon to download ... sometimes when newly published they will put a number of downloads out there before they start to charge. Recommend the Kindle ... It's really good for nights when I can't get back to sleep as I can read in the dark and not bother anyone. Be sure to keep the charger with you as the battery lasts for little more than one book.

I'm still trying to figure out how to use it for internet/wifi access. We do have wi/fi at home and I've tried in hotels when traveling... sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. when it does work the page format is very diff from my desktop and I don't like that. My biggest complaint is how slow it is to work on the internet. I know others have told me they use it for movies or music... haven't figured that out yet... haven't really had time to try. Therefore, I don't have stacks of books sitting around. I also follow the sites that give reviews on free e-books. That way if I don't like the book, I can just delete it and I haven't spent alot of money. I have a friend that thought she would never switch to a kindle because she likes the feel of a real book. A friend (retired libraian)has a Kindle Fire she loves because it's back lit and she can read in the dark. I try to sleep in the dark. I think the Kindle Fire has a voice so you can listen, but it's to big to hassle with as I sew. I made a little pouch for my MP3 and it's small, so it just hangs there around my neck and I listen comfortably as I sew. It is something that is available when we are out and about. Like there is Wifi available at Starbucks. That is just internet access. The reason why I got an iPOD was to listen to audiobooks. Wisconsin has a digital library and our muncipality bought a membership to use this library last year. Residents can check out copies of books (e and audio), music and videos electronically. It is a really great system and I think that it is the wave of the future for libraries. The important thing to know is if your state and municipality has something like this or plans to in the future. You would want to get something that supports what they have or get. Library useage is free, but you might have to wait for a title and copy useage does expire. If you really fall in love with something that you check out from the library or you simply can't wait, then you can always buy! If money were no object, I would look more towards an iPAD. You can buy kindle apps for some of these devices. I love to listen to books while I quilt! Good luck with your decision.
