I hope you had a fabulous Christmas with your families and/or friends. Maybe you even had a chance to get some sewing done this week. I hope you did.  I've completed several projects, which has been great.  My daughter and the 2 darling grandkids are arriving this afternoon so my sewing machine is getting put away.

I know you've been anxiously awaiting the final three blocks of our Sow-a-Long that I've been promising.

1.  CACTUS POT (can never have too many baskets!)

Cut 2 strips one dark and one light / bright, 14" x 1.25". Sew together lengthwise and cut into

Thank you very much to all of my followers and those of you who have been doing my Sow-A-Long for the past year.  It's been a great adventure; I've enjoyed it tremendously. One of the best parts has been the new blogging friends I've made through this project. What a gift!!

  One of my 2013 projects is going to be to put these blocks together. PLEASE be sure to send me pictures of your progress setting these blocks. I will post them on my blog.

New project for next year? Of course.  Just haven't figured it out yet. It will be a short-term project, though, so will be easier to keep up.

THREE SOW-A-LONG blocks, at last!

I know I've been unreliable about posting my blocks in a timely fashion.  I'm just not the best blogger. I'm sorry. You know why, of course...Nana time!!

Anyway, here are the three I promised.  I will post the last three in the next day or so.

1.  BASKET (can never have too many baskets!)

Background:  cut (1) 4" square
Dark:           cut (1) 4" square, making (1) hst, 3-1/2" unf, 3" fin (one extra)

Dark:          Cut (1) 1-1/2" square, cut ONCE on the diagonal
Background: cut (1) 3-1/2" square, cut ONCE on the diagonal (one extra tri)
Background: cut (2) 2 x 3-1/2" rectangles

Background: Cut (3) 2-1/2" squares

Background:  Cut (4) 2-1/2" square, cut ONCE on the diagonal.

Center:  Cut (1) 2" square
Black:    Cut (2) 2" square, cut ONCE on the diagonal.
You are making a Square in a Square, 2-3/4" unf, 2-1/4" fin.

Black:  Cut (4) 1-1/2" squares
Medium:  cut (4) 1-1/2" x 2-3/4" rectangles
This center unit will measure 4-3/4" unf, 4-1/4" fin.

There are three more coming in the next day or two.

Third Wednesday of November: SOW A LONG blocks

Are you ready for three more blocks to add to your quilt?  We are almost at the end:  6 more after this installment and then you get to figure out how you're going to set all these darling 6" blocks.  Mine are still stuffed into a large zip lock baggie!! 

1.  LEAF BLOCK

Background:   Cut (4) 1-1/2" x 2-1/2" rectangles
                    cut (4) 1-1/2" squares
Medium:        cut (4) 1-1/2" squares
Center (Dark) cut (1) 2-1/2" square
dark 2:          cut (4) 1-1/2" x 2-1/2" rectangles (my reds)

You also need 4 flying geese, 1-1/2" x 2-1/2" unf, 1x2 fin.

2. STREAK OF LIGHTNING

This block is totally scrappy:
Background:  cut (7) 1-1/2" x 2-1/2" rectangles
                   cut (3) 1-1/2" squares
Blues:          cut (4) 1-1/2" x 2-1/2" rectangles
                  cut (1) 1-1/2" square
Reds:          cut (4) 1-1/2" x 2-1/2" rectangles
                  cut (2) 1-1/2" squares

3.  DOUBLE X:

Background:  cut (4) 1-1/2" x 2-1/2" rectangles
Dark:           cut (4) 1-1/2" x 2-1/2" rectangles (my stripe fabric)

Center:         cut (1) 2-1/2" square

You are making 12 hsts in total, 1-1/2" unf, 1" fin.
AND cut (4) dark 1-1/2" squares (my brown)

This is one of my favorite blocks; I never play with stripes so this was fun.

More gorgeous blocks

Suzanne sent me a few pictures of her blocks and I just love the colors.
It's really interesting to me to see the difference in blocks that are two colors (gorgeous and dramatic) and those that are scrappy (more my style).

French General fabrics

I have to admit that I am a HUGE fan of the French General fabric line from Moda. OMG. I could eat them up.

Piffle sent me a picture of some of her sow-a-long blocks using French General fabrics. Aren't they fabulous??  I'm loving seeing what you've been doing. It amazes me to see how the same pattern can look so different with a change in fabrics.  Keep those cards and pictures coming!!

I am leaving for Sunriver on Saturday...will get my newest blocks done tomorrow for posting on Wednesday. BE READY!!

Sow-A-Long blocks, first Wednesday of November

Are you ready for another installment of blocks?  Here are three blocks for the first Wednesday of November.  There will be another 3 later in the month; then 6 more in December and we're DONE.  WOOHOO.

I'm terribly sorry that I've been so inconsistent. It's very unlike me.  But I obviously made the decision to spend all my free time with my new darling Emma and the sweetest boy Ryan, until my daughter goes back to work. It's a small price to pay but I was happy to do it---and felt really lucky, honestly, to be able to have the time with them! You grandmothers out there will completely appreciate what I'm talking about.

1.  INDIAN PLUME

This block requires 28 scrappy hsts, 1-1/2" unf, 1" fin.
Plus:
background:   (1) 2-1/2" square (center)
                    (4) 1-1/2" squares

2.  DOVE IN THE WINDOW

This is effectively a nine-patch, with the 4 corners being what I call the block "Mary's Triangles"
Corner units:
background:   cut (2) 2" squares, making 4 hsts, 1-1/2" unf, 1" fin.
dark:             cut (2) 2" squares,   "
background:   cut (4) 2" squares, cut ONCE on the diagonal
dark:            cut (2) 3" squares, cut ONCE on the diagonal

Center:
Dark:          cut (1) 2-1/2" square

middle of "9 patches", you will need to make 4 flying geese (1-1/2" x 2-1/2" unf, 1x2 fin), using your favorite method AND

Background:  Cut (1) 1-1/4" x 21" strip
medium:      cut (1) 1-1/4" x 21" strip, making (8) 4-patches, 2" unf,

dark:           cut (4) 2-1/2" squares, making 4 pairs of (2) hsts, 2" unf,

Third Wednesday of October - Sow-A-Long blocks

Okay so they are a little late.  But, honestly, I have NOT been home at all.  If I haven't been at my daughter's, they've been at my house.  I even got to have the beautiful girl Emma at my house TWO nights last week, without her mom! How special was that? Sewing can wait...babies can't! And then of course there's Ryan...

1.  BROKEN WINDOW

This block requires 16 scrappy hsts, 1-1/2" unf, 1" fin, so please use your scraps and make them in your favorite way.

This block also requires 8 flying geese, 1-1/2" x 2-1/2" unfit, 1 x 2" fin.  Please use your favorite method to make them as well.

2.  CONNECTICUT

Dark (center):  Cut (1) 2-5/8" square
medium:         Cut (2) 2-1/2" square, cut ONCE on the diagonal

You are making a square in a square, 3-1/2" unf, 3" fin.

You need (4) flying geese, 2" x 3-1/2" unf, 1-1/2" x 3" fin.
Use your favorite method to make these.

You need 4 hsts, 2" unf, 1-1/2" fin.

I'm only able to post these two this week; my husband and I are leaving early tomorrow for a little getaway.

Sow-A-Long blocks, first Wednesday of October

I just returned from a fabulous week's retreat in New Glarus, Wisconsin, with some wonderful friends.  I was able to work on several projects, especially since my cell phone reception was so crummy and I didn't have the internet, so I had very few distractions!! (aside from my friends who were always very entertaining!!).

So I'm sorry that I wasn't able to post  the blocks for last week's installment -- hopefully you were able to use the extra time to do other projects or maybe even (**gasp**) catch up.

1.  DOMINO NET

9 patches:
Background:   Cut (1) strip 1-1/2" x 17"
dark:             cut (1) strip 1-1/2" x 14"
Sew together to make (2) 9-patches, 3-1/2" unf, 3" fin.

Corners:
Medium:        cut (2) 2-1/2" squares
medium 2:     cut (4) 1-1/2" x 2-1/2" rectangles
Dark:            cut (2) 1-1/2" squares

2.  SMOKEHOUSE

Medium 1:     Cut (1) 3" square, cut ONCE on the diagonal  (my RED)
Medium 2:     cut (1) 3" square, cut ONCE on the diagonal  (my BLACK)
Background:   Cut (4) 2" squares, cut ONCE on the diagonal

Background:   cut (6) 2" squares
Medium:        cut (6) 2" squares
You are making 12 hsts, 1-1/2" fun, 1" fin. 

I have called these units "Mary's triangles"--they consist of a hst, 2 background triangles and one large medium triangle from above. They each  should measure 2-1/2" unf, 2" fin.

When you sew 4 of them together to form the center unit, it should measure  4-1/2" unfin, 4" fin.

Dark (corners):  cut (4) 1-1/2" squares (my BLACK)

Background:   Cut (4) 2" squares
Medium:        cut (1) 3-1/4" square, cut TWICE on the diagonal
You are making (4) flying geese, 1-1/2" x 2-1/2" unfin, 1" x 2" fin.

3.  SQUARES AND DIAMONDS:

Medium (center):   Cut (1) 2-1/2" square (my RED)

Medium:       cut (2) 3-1/4" square, cut TWICE on the diagonal (my BLUE)
Dark:           cut (1) 3-1/4" square, cut TWICE on the diagonal (my PINK)
Medium 2:    cut (1) 3-1/4" square, cut TWICE on the diagonal (my BEIGE)
These are the star points/quarter square triangles.

Background: cut (2) 3" squares
Medium:      cut (2) 3" squares (my RED)
You are making (4) half square triangles, 2-1/2" unf, 2" fin. 

That's it! aren't they fabulous? I loved looking at them while retreating, and couldn't wait to share them.

Next set of blocks with be posted Oct. 17th (second Wednesday of the month). You are almost finished. I will be posting blocks until mid-December! Then onto the next year's project!!!

Third Sow-A-Long block

It's been a busy week and I'm sorry I didn't get this block to you sooner. I was helping out with the baby all week and only got back last night.

Think of this as a bonus block!

CARRIE NATION:

Little 4-patches:
Background:  Cut (1) strip 1-1/4" x 12"
                   cut (4) 2" squares
Dark:            Cut (1) strip 1-1/4"" x 12"
Sewing two strips together, cross cut 8 of them at 1-1/4" intervals; sew together in pairs and make (4) sets of 4-patches -  2" unf, 1-1/2" fin. Sew these small 4-patches to a "solid" background to make another 4-patch unit 3-1/2" unf, 3" fin

Large 4-patches:
Background:   Cut (1) strip 2" x 10"
Medium:        cut (1) strip 2" x 10"
Sewing two strips together, cross cut 4 of them at 2" intervals; sew together to make (2) 4 patches, 3-1/2" unf, 3"" fin.

I'm leaving in the morning for my retreat in Wisconsin so I'll be posting from there. My plan is to post the next 3 blocks on Wednesday from the retreat.

Third Wednesday of September...SOW-A-LONG day

Hi ladies,
Well, it's the third Wednesday of September already. I can't believe it.  I'm getting ready to head back to Wisconsin for my retreat with my dear friends and I'm very excited. But, until then, I have a couple of blocks to keep you busy. Only TWO right now because I ran out of time, having been spending so much time with the baby.  I promise to make up the missing block some time in the next week.

GENTLEMAN'S FANCY

Medium (center)  cut (1) 2-1/2" square
Background:       cut (2) 2-1/2" square, cut on the diagonal ONCE
You are sewing a square in a square, 3-1/2" unf.

Flying geese:
Background:      cut (8) 2" squares
Medium:           cut (4) 2 x 3-1/2" rectangles
Sew on the diagonal of the backgrounds to make 4 flying geese, 2x3-1/2" unf.

Corners:
Medium:         cut (2) 3-1/2" squares, cut on the diagonal ONCE
                    cut (1) 3-1/4" square, cut on the diagonal TWICE

THIS AND THAT:
You are making FOUR square in a square blocks, two pairs of opposites

One pair:
Background:    cut (2) 2" square  (center)
dark:             cut (4) 2" squares, cut on the diagonal ONCE.
Your square in a square should measure 2-3/4" unf.
Add:
Background:   cut (4) 2-1/2" squares, cut on the diagonal ONCE
Sew a square in a square, measuring 3-1/2" unf, 3" fin.

Second pair:
Dark:           cut (2) 2" square (center)
background:  cut (4) 2" squares, cut on the diagonal ONCE
Your square in a square should measure 2-3/4" unf.
Add:
Dark:          cut (4) 2-1/2" squares, cut on the diagonal ONCE
Sew a square in a square, measuring 3-1/2" unf, 3" fin.
Sew together.

You could choose to make all 4 different, obviously. That's optional.

I cannot believe it's September already. If I had kids in school, I'd really be in shock.  As it is, I can feel the change in the weather up here in Sunriver, where the mornings are 32*, I kid you not!!  I went for a bike ride today and thought the view from the river was just gorgeous. It's 80* during the days; cool at night! I think this is one of my most favorite views here in Sunriver. So serene and peaceful.

Anyway, on to the blocks, which I know you're very excited to get started on!

Pinwheels and Sawtooth:

I hope you are having a great week and are all caught up. It's time for the next three blocks in our Sow-A-Long.

MOSAIC

Background:   Cut (6) 2" squares, cut on the diagonal ONCE
Dark:                cut (6) 2" squares, cut on the diagonal ONCE
We are making 12 hsts, 1-1/2" unf, 1" fin.

Background:   cut (4) 2" squares, cut on the diagonal ONCE
Dark:                cut (4) 2" squares, cut on the diagonal ONCE

Background #2:  Cut (2) 3" squares, cut on the diagonal ONCE
Dark #2:               Cut (2) 3" squares, cut on the diagonal ONCE

Each unit, when sewn together, should measure 3-1/2".

DARTING BIRD SET

We are making 4 sets. For each set:

Background:   Cut (2) 2" squares
Dark:                Cut (2) 2" squares
You are making 4 hsts, 1-1/2" unf, 1" fin.

Background:  Cut (1) 2" square, cut on the diagonal ONCE
                         Cut (1) 1-1/2" square
Dark:               Cut (1) 3" square, cut on the diagonal ONCE (you will have one extra triangle)
                        Cut (1) 1-1/2" square

You may decide to rearrange them in different directions, as in the Barrister's Block!


CHAINED STAR

Background:      Cut (4) 1-1/2" squares
Dark/medium:    Cut (4) 1-1/2" squares
These are the directions for TWO sets of 4-patches.  You need a total of 5 sets---
two sets:  background/medium
two sets:  background/dark
one set:    dark/medium

Background:     Cut (1) 3-1/4" square, cut on the diagonal TWICE
Dark #2:            Cut (2) 3-1/4" squares, cut on the diagonal TWICE
Medium #2:      Cut (1) 3-1/4" square, cut on the diagonal TWICE

Piece together to make 4 quarter square triangles, 2-1/2" unf, 2" fin. Be careful of placement so that background is on the outside and medium #2 is surrounding your center 4-patch.

First Wednesday of August - Sow-A-Long

FINALLY!! You are going to be so excited by this set of blocks! Hopefully you will feel that it was worth the wait!! I love them!


HANDWEAVE:


Background:  Cut (12) 1-1/4" x 2" rectangles
Dark:           cut (4) 2" squares (red corners)
Medium:       cut (4) 2" squares (my green)
2nd medium: cut (1) 2" square (center)
2nd dark:      cut (4) 1-1/4" squares

MISSOURI STAR:


Background:   cut (4) 2" squares (corners)


Background:   cut (1) 4-1/4" square; cut on the diagonal TWICE
Medium:        cut (2) 2-3/4" squares, cut on the diagonal TWICE
Dark:            cut (2) 2-3/4" squares, cut on the diagonal TWICE
  These are to make the "flying geese". You need to piece the "geese". Note that I made a mistake and switched one pair of triangles around. You need to be consistent.  Fortunately I caught it and fixed it before I sewed it together.


2nd dark:     cut (1) 2-5/8" square (center)
2nd medium:cut (2) 2-1/2" squares, cut on the diagonal ONCE
  You are making a square in a square.  It will measure 3-1/2" unf, 3" fin.

BOXES AND BASKETS:


Background:   Cut (6) 2" squares
Medium:        cut (6) 2" squares, you are making 12 hsts, 1" fin, 1-1/2" unf.

2nd Medium:   cut (1) 2-1/2" square (center)

Using 2nd medium (center) and 3rd medium, make a square in a square. It's 3-1/4" unf,  2-3/4" fin; add the dark to create another square around the square. It is 4-1/2" unf, 4" fin.

That's it for this week. I hope you are having fun doing this project. I laid my blocks out so I could see how they were looking. I have to admit that I am liking it. I'm not sure how I'm going to set them: sashing v. no sashing. I think I need more yellow and maybe blue!

Background:  cut (1) 4" square, making 2 hsts 3-1/2" unfin, 3" fin
Dark:           cut (1) 4" square


Background:  cut (4) 2-1/2" squares, making 8 hsts 2" unfin, 1-1/2" fin
Mediums:      cut (4) 2-1/2" squares


NOTE:  I made two blocks since I made my small hsts scrappy and used only one fabric pair for each block. In order to do that, you will need to make another pair of dark 3-1/2" hsts.
