Moda Blockheads II just about done

I mentioned before that I've been working almost exclusively (when I've had a chance to sit at the machine, that is!) on finishing up the Moda Blockheads II project.  Mine is red/white/blue.

I couldn't even tell you how many blocks there are.  I fell a bit behind (of course) but decided recently that I wanted it finished.

So I've got all the sections pieced together (I must admit that I substituted some blocks and made other changes..my quilt, right??!!).  Now I'm debating whether to add sashing (a very light fabric with small red/white/blue stars) or not.  I originally thought YES I wanted it.  But I photographed the sections with and without.  I'm not so sure I want the sashing now!
What do you think??

with sashing vs.

I haven't worked on anything else in a while, although I did go back to Washington, DC twice in September, so that counts for something, right?

I'm going to try to get my September mini done today, though!  Have to decide what to use.  And after I finish a long project, I always find it difficult to transition to another project.  So I'm now currently "unattached"!! vbg

I am pretty sure I mentioned that in January, my son joined the Marines to be a reserve officer.  He just completed the second phase of his training and we went back for the graduation last week.  We are sure proud of him.  He gave up his entire life at 30 yrs old to give this a try. He was one of the "oldest" in the group. Such a rigorous training they put these young men through.

  1. Your blocks are so beautiful, Randy. Block Heads II will make a stunning quilt. I would go without the sashing but it's not my quilt! VBG! Your son is very handsome. Wow! Congratulations to him for making his dream come true. ;^)

  3. Love your patriotic themed Cheddarback.
Personally, I like the sashing breaking it upinto sections and giving the eye a place to rest.
Your son looks very handsome in his uniform!

  4. I love the blocks either way, but if it were my quilt I think I'd leave the sashings for another project. Of course if you ask ten people you'll get two different answers, probably about evenly split, lol! Your quilt, your rules! Congratulations on your son's achievement and thank him for his service.

  5. The applique basket block is my favorite of all that you have made. The red, white, blue combo for your blocks was a good choice.
Your son must be very fit to make it through his training.

  6. You must be so proud! I can only imagine how rough the training is. It isn't easy on the family either so you should be proud of yourself too. I can't believe how many blocks there are in the Blockheads II series. Guess that is why I didn't do this one! I love it both ways, but I think I like it best without sashing. Fun!

  8. Your quilt is going to be beautiful either way. For me, I would go with sashing because there is going to be a lot of fabric in the seams, but that is just me. Congrats on your son!

  14. I love the Moda II blocks!! I think I like it better without the sashing, but either way it will be great. I didn't do the Moda II because I still have the Moda I blocks to put together. I'm hoping to get that done sometime next year. I'm too busy this year getting ready for some craft shows and then a trip to visit 2 sons & families in December. I know how proud you are of your son and we are very thankful for good men in our military. Our son is a Lt. Colonel in the Air Force and will be retiring soon. I don't think he's set the date yet (he's our Eli's Daddy).
