A gift befitting my age

Many of you guessed what I bought myself! Bravo to you.

I'm not yet sure of its age but it definitely is a 66.  To change the stitch length, there's a large silver button on the right!  I have learned that the 66 was the precursor to the 201, which I love (and own two!)

I'm sure many of you know much more about this little beauty. I'll learn. For the time being, I'm going to play around with her until I learn the proper foot mechanics to run it!!

I think the one machine I still need to find is a hand-crank. My friend Claire remembered in a comment on my blog that I owned one in the early 1970s when I was in the Peace Corps in Liberia and lived 600 miles from the capital city and had no electricity nor running water. That was a great machine and I still regret not sending it home at the end of my tour.

I'm happy with my find. I bought it from a man who restores old machines so I am confident it's in good working order!

So what a great birthday it has been!

  5. You can download a free manual here: http://www.singerco.com/support/instruction-manuals
I love my treadles, it took me a while to get the rhythm, I finally just grabbed someone and asked them to show me what to do, it was easy after that! LOL I put one foot at the top and one at the right. You have to give the wheel a spin with your hand until your feet catch the rhythm of the wheel, it just needs a little jump start.Check out treadleon.net for some great info. I do all of my quilting on a treadle, let me know if you need any help. You can always convert an old Singer into a handcrank. I'll convert ones that are missing foot pedals and my favorite is a 99 (3/4 size of the 66).

  10. She's a Beauty!! and I love the 3 drawers on each side! My GGma's only has two. I'm sure you'll get the hang of it! If the stitch length is adjusted I wouldn't touch it. It's kind of like tension that way. I can show you how the foot peddles work on mine if you don't get the hang of it. Happy B-day! cheers, cw

  12. Lucky you! A great birthday gift to yourself. I'm so jealous. Right now, even if I found one, I just don't have room for it. They are so wonderful - I remember my Grandma using hers. Too bad the family didn't keep it.
