Finally, a hike!!

My husband and I have been wanting to go for a hike forever but every time we've been at the cabin, there have been issues relating to the mom to make it impossible.

Today we decided was the day we were going.  We hiked about 7 miles to these beautiful falls called Tumalo Falls.

But first you have to enjoy this sign we saw along the trail!  I think it's a life lesson:  look, listen and smile!!

Max was a real trooper.  he did wade into the creek once which was a bit deeper than we thought but he managed to scamper out.  He will need to be groomed.  Dusty!!

I have done a little sewing this week and made my May mini!  I used 2" bow ties that I made years ago and had collected in a zip lock baggie.  There are still many more but I'm happy with how this turned out.  Now just need to quilt it
.

Next project is to go back to the triangle gatherings and work on my setting, which I'm still stumped on.  I suppose I could use only some of the  98 blocks in a quilt and use a couple of different settings. What a concept!!

My mom is not doing great.  I was told on Thursday that she wandered away from the facility and got lost.  She got it into her head that she had to go to the Dollar Store down the street (mind you, this street is a VERY busy thoroughfare!).  She doesn't believe that she got lost, denies getting confused and continues to lament her loss of independence (I completely understand but still... she had no alternatives!)  Oh and the first trip she made to the Dollar Store was after she went to Ace Hardware and got a complete stranger to give her a ride to the Dollar Store (no idea why...).

Things are not looking great.  I did give her an id bracelet I'd ordered for her, just in case she wanders off again.  I am keeping my fingers crossed that she remembers that she shouldn't go out the front door.  It's still terribly sad, as I'm sure so many of you know from personal experience.  Getting old (she's 90) is tough and dementia is even more frustrating.  Thanks for listening...

Back to my machine!

  1. So, so sorry to hear about your Mom. They finally had to put my Mom in the secure unit. I felt so bad, she just wanted to go home, but that wasn’t possible.
Love you mini bow tie quilt, great sign, beautiful Falls! Tumalo Falls, any connection to Bonnie Hunter’s Tumalo Trails quilt?

  2. That was the crazy trail we did on the ice! Total body workout! LOL I'm so happy spring is finally here.
Dang, about your mom. Sounds like she will need to get into the memory unit where they are't allowed to wonder off.

  4. Sad to hear about your Mom--mine used to wander away too--it is really worrying. A secure facility was the next step....

I LOVE your mini--I want to make smaller blocks--but, I think they are more difficult as one's piecing has to be more precise. But, I cannot make big quilts anymore so onward I forge...
Lovely Falls you visited; great you could get in a hike...hugs, Julierose

  9. I'm sorry that your mom had this experience. I hope the facility can be of some help as well. Your May quilt is adorable with all those little bow ties. How nice to get them out of the ziplock baggy and sewn together.

  13. Sad news about your mom ... We're going through that right now with both of hubby's sisters (one is in IL and the other in MN and they are both older than him). One keeps packing her clothes because "mom and dad" are coming to pick her up. It's a horrible disease. Keeping you in my thoughts and prayers. Linda

  14. So sorry to hear about your Mom. It is so hard! I am happy that you were able to at least get away for a beautiful hike. You May mini is incredible! It is very ambitious even if the blocks were made before. Hope you get some relaxing time soon!

  15. Ahhhh so hard to have to watch your Mom's mental changes. My MIL is 94 and sharp as they come mentally...but her spine is collapsing and causing her such pain. She moved in with her daughter in Fla. but misses her home in NY. She goes to PT three times a week so she can keep walking with a walker and not lose her last bit of independence. So hard growing old :0(
