The blocks are growing like weeds... well, not exactly

Now that I've finished my August mini and it's on its way to Janet O, I've had some time to focus on other projects.

I did finish another little Primitive Gatherings Freebie, which I am just loving.  I finished that up on the drive up to the cabin;  have two more in process and I'm almost done, except for the finish, which I haven't even figured out yet.

I might even go so far as to say that I'm getting my stem stitch figured out...maybe!

I've also been working on Bonnie H's block, the diamond tiles.  I love that block.  I can precut the pieces and them whip them up.  Sadly, one block was missing one piece so I had to substitute.  No big deal, right??  Not particularly noticeable, hopefully.  I didn't have any more of the original green so I had to scrounge around the cabin for something close.

One of my favorite parts of this block is the ability to fussy cut the centers;  and to play around with coordinating the 3 other fabrics.  These are the latest blocks I've been making this week.

Sadly, in the middle of my progress, my little iron died. These little ones are great for pressing individual blocks next to my machine and they don't last terribly long but I was still very sad to lose this one.  I did have one of those little Rowenta irons here at the cabin so I was able to substitute.  Have you had better luck with any little irons?  I'd love to hear about it.

I have covered little tv tables (from when we'd eat tv dinners in front of the tv when I was a kid!) and set one up adjacent to my machine.  It's perfect.  No need to get up! VBG

Hope everyone is enjoying a great last weekend of summer.

  3. I love your diamond tile blocks, especially the tractor one. I have the directions and have been anxious to get started on one too. They'll make a fabulous I spy quilt for one of the grandkids.

  4. Love your handwork ... so far I've managed to NOT get caught in the wool fever! LOL Your "Bonnie" blocks are WONDERFUL!! Love each and every one of them. Might have to take a look at that block again ... thanks for sharing. I had the small Rowenta iron which I used next to my sewing station. It caught fire while I was sitting next to it ... scared the heck out of me. Make sure you unplug after each use ... Happy Labor Day!!

  5. Your Diamond Tiles are wonderful! I can see why they are so much fun with the scraps you are choosing. I have one of those Steamfast irons. I don't really use it that often and don't put water in it...so it will probably last awhile, I hope. I make myself get up to use the iron so that I keep my body moving. It doesn't speed the quilting process much though.

  7. You have so many fun fabrics for fussy cutting those centers! I've never found a small iron that lasts very long--especially if water is used. If there is an iron with a long life, I'd like to know about it too!

  10. Your little basket is a darling. I love how you did the flowers. So cute. Can't wait to see all of them together. Love looking at your newest blocks too. They are all so different, then Benjamin popped up. I laughed. I never had a little iron so I can't help you here. Not saying how old my iron is as I'm afraid I'll jinx it. lol. ;^)

  11. All your blocks look great, especially the diamond tile block. I KNOW i have the pattern here somewhere. Can you refresh my memory of what issue of Quiltmaker it was in, or what the cutting instructions are? Meanwhile, I will continue to look and look in this sewing room of mine.

  12. I have a little GE travel iron. Bought it at a garage sale for $2 several years ago, and it works like a charm.

  14. The little flower basket is so cute! I've had my steam fast iron for about 5 years now...still works very well. I do not put water in it....and also use one of those mini pressing mats that has the silver stay fabric on it. Of course....I'm sure you use your iron more than I do! :-)

  15. Oh those little wool blocks are so sweet! Love the H blocks too especially with those I spy centers. I love running out of a particular fabric and having to improvise. After all, that is what they did in the old days! I have tried every iron out there and I have finally settled on a $12.00 Black and Decker. I bought two about 12 years ago thinking they wouldn't last. I just opened the new one last year so the first one lasted 11 years. I don't use steam so that may prolong its life, but I like it because it gets and stays hot and I just use a little spray water bottle. Works for me!

  16. Those little basket blocks are darling.
I think you are having way too much fun with the diamond tiles! :) They do appear to lend themselves very well to fussy-cutting.
My small irons have always been thrift store finds. Like Wendy, I never use the steam features and they seem to last a long time.
