Boy, those two weeks sure went fast! Hope everyone is all caught up, even with the bonus blocks!
Today we have three new blocks AND a bonus block, just because...
Dutchman's Puzzle
Cut background (4) 2-1/2" squares (for flying geese, need 4)
cut medium (1) 4-1/4" square
Please see previous instructions for making flying geese. You need (4) which will finish at 1-1/2 x 3".(2 x 3-1/2" unfinished!)
Cut background (4) 2-1/2" square (for flying geese, need 4)
cut dark (1) 4-1/4" square
You will need (4) of these flying geese. Total is (8) flying geese.
Sawtooth Star
Cut background (4) 2" squares
Cut background (1) 4-1/4" square (for 4 flying geese)
cut dark (4) 2-1/2" square (2 x 3-1/2" unfinished)
Cut dark (1) 2-5/8" square (center)
Cut medium (2) 2-1/2" square, cut once on the diagonal. You are making a square in a square. Square up to 3-1/2" unfinished.
Hooker's Hat Patch**
Cut background (3)- 2-1/2" squares (for corners and center)
Cut background (3) - 3" squares (for 6 hsts, finishing at 2")
cut dark (3) - 3" squares (for 6 hsts, finishing at 2")
NOTE: I do my hsts extra large allowing for fudge room; I cut them down to the size 2-1/2" unfinished. You can also use the easy angle, cutting strips 2-1/2".
**from Carol Hopkins' Civil War Legacies
BONUS BLOCK (just because!!)
Cut 4 different squares 4-1/4"; then cut diagonally twice to make (4) quarter square triangles, 3-1/2" unfinished.
That's IT!! Not so bad!
Please let me know how you're doing!!!!
Love to you all,
Randy, ready to tackle the latest JTForever blocks!! vbg
Thanks Randy! I am soooo enjoying this...look forward to each and every one!
ReplyDeleteGreat Randy! Just love doing the blocks. Keep them coming.
ReplyDeleteGoing to be sewing today! Do you know after this posting exactly how many blocks plus bonus blocks we should have made?? I want to make sure i have not missed something!!
ReplyDeleteSo enjoying this!!!
I got all caught up....even with the BONUS blocks! So, I'm ready for these.
ReplyDeleteI finished the other blocks last night! Whew! It felt good to be caught up for one good night's sleep! : )
ReplyDeleteI was feeling the pressure until last night, talk about getting in under the wire!! But I had made a couple of extras in March so I think I'm even. This is fun, can't wait to see all the variations.
ReplyDeleteMine are on my blog here: http://sewinginwisconsin.blogspot.com/
Thanks, Randy!
I love the Dutchman's puzzle block!!
ReplyDeleteI just realized that I'm making your terrific blocks but I wasn't a follower. Well, that's now taken care of. Thanks for taking the time to post all of these great blocks. I'm almost caught up. Yippee!
ReplyDeleteHi Randy! I was caught up.....but now I am in Mexico, sitting in the resort lobby, looking at these beautiful blocks that await me when I get home.
ReplyDeleteGreetings from the Mayan Riviera! Think I can find a Quilt store?
I'm done with the last ones, so I'm ready for theese. I'm sure they will be fun!
ReplyDeleteJust finished the last ones last night, too! I'm loving this sow along!
ReplyDeleteI have to laugh at the Hooker's Hat Patch block. Looks familiar- just never heard it called that!
ReplyDeleteBlocks all cut and kitted up to take to a three day quilting retreat starting Friday. Should be all caught up by the time I get home. Thanks for the sow along Randy.
ReplyDeleteI told you I'd get caught up! I have 2 months worth of blocks cut and ready to go. As soon as I get the fabric cleaned up, I'm off to sew! Yea!
ReplyDeleteJust need to make these! So enjoying this. Looking forward to the linky party, so we see each others blocks!
ReplyDeleteHave a great week!
Thanks for the new blocks, I just finished. A couple of corrections: Sawtooth Star, the center square in the square-in-a-square should be cut 2 and 5/8 inches rather than 2 and 1/2. And the bonus block, the starting squares should be cut 4 and 1/4 inches rather than 3 and 1/4 inches!
ReplyDeleteThanks Marianne for the correction. I try SOOO hard to make sure I don't have any errors. You are correct. The center of the sawtooth star will work better if it's 2-5/8". And the cutting on the bonus block should have read 4-1/4". I'm new at writing patterns so bear with me, please!!!
DeleteI'm loving this sow-a-long. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteSo how many have been given so far, including the bonus blocks??? I think 21?? Is that correct? I know I'm behind, just trying to figure out how many I need to get caught up on. ;) Thanks!
ReplyDeleteLove from Indiana! ~bonnie
Me too! I think I counted 21 with these new ones. I am trying to catch up, but I have a ways to go!! I have six done, and decided today, I needed to make a Christmas quilt at the same time, so I am sewing the first six blocks in Christmas fabrics tonight, and from then on make two each time! I may be asking what was I thinking!!!
DeleteSo, How come I have 24 blocks?! I love them all. Maybe I've made a few extra of some she had drafted?! They all scrappy-match, so they'll work.
DeleteAre we sure that the flying geese for the Dutchman's Puzzle are supposed to be cut down to 1 1/2" by 3"? I'm afraid to cut them that small without being sure! LOL!
ReplyDeleteNevermind...1 1/2" x 3" is finished size...duh. I believe they are to be trimmed to 2" x 3 1/4" for the correct block size but don't hold me to that because I haven't finished it yet.
ReplyDeleteI came back to check on comments because I was wondering the same thing! Did the 2 x 3 1/4 trim size work?
Deleteit is still sitting on my cutting table! I am now thinking it Must be 2 x 3 1/2....I was waiting for Randy or someone else to let us know...
DeleteI ended up trimming to 2 x 3 1/2 based on the directions in the block after it. My points didn't match up right, but I'm not sure it's because of the trimming! :)
DeleteThanks Tori! Think I will just try that too...must move on!....
DeleteThe blocks have been great fun! Since we have enough I have started assembling mine into a top. You can see my progress at www.splintersenthreads.blogspot.com.
