Fire fire, IRON on fire

I have a little ironing table next to me at my sewing machine and last night while I was sewing I heard a noise from the iron (it's a Steamfast little portable iron) and looked over to see this:

There were a few clicks and then it spontaneously combusted.  This is what was left after:

Good thing I was sitting right at the sewing machine.  I have to admit that there have been nights when I've left the iron on...

I'm trying to find out who to notify about this so others can be warned.  Be careful if you have this iron... don't leave it alone!

  1. Yikes! Glad it was sitting on that wool mat. I can't believe you had the foresight to take a photo! I did't even remember to take a photo at my grandson's birthday! I think Facebook would be a good place to post it. Seems like the most popular place. Stay safe! No more ironing today!

  3. Okay, Randy, I just can't help laughing, though I know it is no laughing matter. I know we bloggers do some crazy things for a photo to post, but I'm not sure even I would have thought to take a photo if my iron burst into flames. I would have kicked into "get it out NOW" mode.
That said, I am SO glad this didn't happen sometime when you weren't there to take care of it. That is scary. Even though my iron turns itself off (not a travel iron), I still don't like to leave it plugged in when I am not around.

  5. Wow, so glad you weren't injured or away from home when this happened. A reminder to all of us. I once had an iron begin to smoke while I was using it, but unplugged before it burst into flames. I also try to remember to unplug all my vintage sewing machines when not in use. A number of years ago I had a friend return home from shopping to the smell of smoke, her sewing machine had been left plugged in and was smoking but had not yet burst into flame. If it's a vintage machine and is plugged in, the machine is ON. The little on/off switch is only for the light.

  6. I have seen several quilters showing this iron in videos and on blog and Facebook posts. I thought it looked cute and so many commented about how much they like it. I think I will skip purchasing one after seeing yours after a burst of flame. I am glad you were right there when it happened.

  10. I have this iron and I have accidentally left it on for long periods. I am used to my auto-shut off iron. Thanks for the warning. Glad you were there and safe.

  15. Oh my gosh! I can't believe it. Wow! I always unplug everything. You never know if you get a power surge every now and then which can damage machines. You were lucky that you were in the room.

  16. OMG---thankfully you were there when that happened--could have been a tragic disaster! I hope your wool mat is okay too. Several years ago I left a Rowenta travel iron on in my sewing room for many days--only noticed when I heard the "ticking". I'm thankful that nothing happened because that particular iron never turns off.
