Blown away!

I have to say that I have been completely overwhelmed by the stories you have all shared regarding care for your elderly parents.  Each one was more poignant than the next.  I can't thank you enough for sharing and opening your hearts with your stories.  I wish everyone the best throughout those very difficult and painful times!

My mom has been released into a nursing home. She's almost completely bed-ridden (this for a woman who swam in a swim meet and hiked miles just before she got sick) and in a lot of pain.  Certainly makes for thought on choices that we want to make for ourselves as we age, I'll tell ya.

So I've done very little sewing. But, of course, we had to spend some time with our darling grandson Ryan. My daughter recently moved into a new house in San Francisco and had to temporarily part with some of the quilts I have given her over the years.  She made a couple of piles in her kitchen of the ones she CAN'T part with and Ryan has made himself very comfortable on them!!

The quilt I made for his birth is the blue/white 9-patch on top!

I hope to be able to share more quilting related stuff this week.
How are your farmer's wife blocks coming along?? You have an extra week until the next installment so lots of time to catch up and/or make a second set!! There are definitely a few over-achievers out there! And you know who you are!! VBG

Love to you all,
Randy

  1. That must be really tough for your Mom to be so immobilized in such a short period of time! Not so easy on you, either.
That is quite a pile of quilts that she is keeping! That means that you have given her even more--talk about over-achieving! : )

  2. I just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate your blog. First of all, your Farmer's Wife Sow Along is just wonderful. I gave the book to three of my closest quilting friends and we are going to start meeting in a few weeks to get started and we will be using your much appreciated block instructions. Second, your thoughts about caring for elderly parents could not be more timely. My quilting friends and I are all going through what you are and your words and the words of your blog followers were so encouraging. So, thank you very much.

  5. My parents are gone now, how I miss them, they both died in their sleep 12 years apart. They were independent their entire lives.
My father-in-law suffered a stroke and heart attack four years ago when we took him on vacation with us. We did get him home in time to die in his own home as he wished.
Now my mother-in-law just went from being completely independent to unable to open a refrigerator door or get out of bed without help over night from spinal stenosis. We are going through, hospitalizations, rehab centers, and finally moving her to another state to live with her daughter.
Now she has to decide if she wants to sell her home where she has been for nearly 60 years. Move to assisted living? Live with her daughter? Stay at home with live in help? It is not easy watching a bright woman faced with these end of life decisions. Luckily she is quite capable of making her own decisions. Her poor body is just crumbling though and she is in constant pain, needless to say she can not live by herself.

Growing old is not for sissies that is for sure.
Yes, we all need to make a plan, but life has so many twist and turns we never know how things will turn out. My kids sure know my wishes though.

Happy Sewing...while we can right? :0)
