Blocks 7, 8 and 9 of Sow-A-Long

Happy Wednesday fellow bloggers!! And sowers!!! :-)
Is everybody READY??? All caught up??? Let's get sowing!! Remember that all the blocks finish at 6"!!

We are going to be doing a basket, a churn dash and a broken dishes block for this installment.

CHURN DASH (block 7)
Cut background (1) 1-1/2" x 12"
     dark fabric  (1) 1-1/2" x 12"
Cut background (2) 3" square
     dark fabric  (2) 3" square
Cut background (1) 2-1/2" square

Sew the two 1-1/2" x 12" strips together; subcut to (4) 1-1/2 x 2-1/2" units.
Press the 3" squares right sides together; draw a diagonal line and sew on both sides of line. Square up to (4) 2-1/2" half square triangles. There are many other ways to do hsts; I also use the easy angle method, cutting strips at 2-1/2". Choose your favorite method.

Block 8: Broken Dishes:

Cut background strip (1)  2-1/2" x 20"
     dark strip           (1) 2-1/2" x 20"

You will need 16 half square triangles which are 2" unf (1-1/2" fin.).
I am giving you cutting instructions using the diagonal line drawn/sewing on both sides method. This allows for plenty of "fudge" room;

Block 9: Basket

Background: cut (1) 3-1/2" square
                       (2) 2" x 3-1/2" rectangles
                       (3) 2" squares
                       (1) 4-1/4" square, cut on the diagonal one time (save extra)
Dark fabric: cut  (2) 2" x 3-1/2" rectangles
                       (1) 2-1/2" square, cut on the diagonal one time

Examine the parts of the block on the right. You will see how to piece this block.

That's it!! Easy? You're going to have a fabulous quilt! Thanks for joining in!

Oh, and I had my special Nana time today; my daughter's babysitter was sick  so I got to babysit Ryan! We went to the park nearby (also went for a walk, swept the driveway and washed my car). But here he is! Had to share... forgive me...

Hope you are having fun. Next installment of Barrister's Sow-A-Long will be posted on March 21st. Stay tuned!!!

Love to you all,
Randy

  2. No forgiveness necessary for sharing news of a grandchild. They are wonderful, life-affirming people to have in our lives. Grands are the absolute best! Enjoy your day with Ryan.

  6. Randy, you can ALWAYS share pics of your adorable grandson!!! Such a cutie!!

Fun blocks!! Love the purple print you used for broken dishes!! Lovely!

Have a great week! Let us know when you have the Linky thing going - I'm sure I don't follow every one who is doing the Sow-a-long!

  7. Hi, Thanks for the blocks, I'm having sow much fun sowing along. For the churn dash , you meant to write cut 2 - 3" squares of background and 2 - 3" squares of dark fabric.

    1. ? Randy's instructions look correct to me! These are for the HST's.

    2. I wondered the same thing. The book shows 4 HSTs of each color, so that would be 2 3" squares, yes?

      Delete
    3. I corrected my mistake immediately once Anonymous pointed it out. You will need TWO of both the background and dark 3" squares in order to make 4 hsts.

  8. Love these new blocks-so glad to be sowing along again.
Nana time!! It's the best, and your grandson is adorable (just as adorable as mine, hehe)

  12. Thanks so much for continuing on with your sow-a-long. It would be the only way that I would finish this quilt. And thanks for sharing the pic of your grandson.

    2. I used the original pattern from the book. There was no handle. I intend to post other basket blocks which will have handles! Feel free to add one, however.

  15. Okay, I need to get crackin' on these! Thanks for continuing on, Randy. I need to rename my quilt, though. I think the men's plaid shirts would work well with "Barrister's Day Off" or something along those lines. : )
Very cute little guy. I spent 7 hours today with my second daughter and her two youngest boys. We took the youngest (the one with the seizure disorder) to see his specialist in Salt Lake City. I need some sewing therapy tonight and these blocks will be just the thing!

  16. Aren't grandchildren wonderful? Love my days with the boys! I am lucky that my daughter lives in the same subdivision...we get to have playdates often! Thanks for the cutting directions.

  17. My quilting friend and I will be traveling to Paris this May, can you recommend some quilt shops or antique shops to visit??? Thank you.

  18. Thanks for continuing with the project. Love it! I, too, would like to know if there should be a handle on the basket. Love your sharing pics, since I am Nana also. Share whatever you want.

    1. The original pattern did not have a handle. Feel free to applique one onto the block. I intend to do more baskets in the future. I love that block. They will have handles! vbg

  20. I love reading Bonnie Hunter's blog and when she mentioned this project I couldn't wait to pop over and follow along with you too! I do have the Farmer's Wife book. I purchased it about a year ago and hadn't started it becuase I am a realitively new quilter and not sure I could figure out how to make all of these blocks for the quilt on my own. Thank you for your wonderful instructions I have made the first six blocks with no problems at all. I can't wait to follow along with the rest!!!

  21. I must not have paid attention because I did the basket block last month, LOL! I must be doing them out of some nameless source list, ha ha... I don't know how we're linking up but if anyone wants to see my squares, you can visit my blog. They're all green and beige/white.

    Thanks, Randy!

  24. Hi Randy, thanks so much for continuing with your sow-along, and for sharing pics of your adorable grandson. Aren't those little people just the icing on the cake of life, please do not apologize for sharing him with us. Looking forward to the linky thing. I am now caught up on my blocks and I can honestly say, if you hadn't started this I would have never bought the book and played along. So THANK YOU.

  25. I'm ready to get started on the next set. It will fit in perfectly for my day tomorrow. We finally have a scheduled day off from school and no teacher meetings are required, so I am free to do as I please. Hooray!

  26. Thanks, Randy! I am keeping up for the moment. I'm glad you are continuing on with the SOW Along. I am enjoying it and I always need a little push.

  27. I did put a handle on my basket. I folded a strip lengthwise 8" x 3/4" and pressed it. Then un-stitched a bit on each dark triangle & inserted the strip. Did a straight line handle with a miter fold at the top. You would need to use bias if you wanted to curve it. After applique-ing it in place...hand stitched the seam closed. See sample if you click on my blog logo.

  28. Randy - I must have a newer version of the book - my basket block does have a handle - it's shown as template #10. Haven't checked the CD yet - but the photo shows it with a handle. ;))

    ReplyDelete
  29. While I made a handle the first time around (I had the book with the template, too), this time I used large rick-rack. (Or is it ric rac?) Anyway, pics are on my blog.

  30. I had been trying so hard not to start this quilt but I broke over and ordered the book. I received it yeserday and made the first block that you posted with your sow-a-long. I'm loving the instructions that you are giving for the blocks. I hope to be caught up with everyone soon. I have so much other quilty stuff going on but I figure 6 blocks or so a month is very "doable" Thanks so much for doing this sow-a-long. I post my first block on my blog last night and I am heading upstairs to the sweat shop to work on a few more...

  31. Just for the record, I went back to the begining of when you started these blocks and 78 copies of the book were in possession of your followers (either they already had a copy that was unused because they couldn't figure out the construction methods or they purchased the book just because of your blog). I stopped counting on the posting where you announced the divorce. I think she was on the verge of becoming the latest quilting celebrity before putting her foot in her mouth.
