Hope you have fun with these.  I had fun making them and picking out the fabrics, as always. That's my favorite part!

I did get to see Ryan today because my daughter wasn't feeling well so I picked him up to spend the night with Nana and Papa.  Here he is thinking very seriously about his dinner.  Note the Elmo placemat and sippy cup!

Have a great week.
Love to you all,
Randy

  1. WooHoo! More blocks--and one of them is a basket!! Goody, goody!
These look really fun, Randy. Thanks for all of your efforts. This is so fun. I even picked up more shirts at the thrift store yesterday--some great new plaids and stripes (somebody stop me. please). And I get to stay home tomorrow and sew. Perfect timing.
Have fun with your little grandson. Precious times!

  4. More pretty blocks! Great job.
Sorry your DD wasn't feeling well. Ryan does look very deep in thought. Or maybe he is just tired from all the fun he had with you.

  6. I like this basket. Lots of fun blocks. So much easier doing just a few at a time.

  7. Love your blocks, especially the Cut Glass Dish. Thanks for all you do for us who just "follow" along. Your efforts are appreciated.

  8. I am really loving this virtual quilting bee and enjoy keeping up. I have been experimenting with the Easy Angle Ruler to make a few bonus blocks on my own in anticipation of what you may be doing next .... anyhoooo back to the ruler...I don't know why I haven't used the ruler a long time ago. It is amazing! Thanks for all you do.

  10. You know, the first time, and I guess the next several times I saw Bonnie H refer to the Easy Angle ruler, I ignored it. But then I remembered I had a Fons & Porter Flying Geese ruler, with corner that does the exact same thing, and got it out to give it a try. I have found that I use it all the time now! For so long, I cut my squares that extra 2/8ths for my HSTs, and really didn't like the odd-sized scraps I seemed to end up with. I also finally understood why Bonnie keeps her scraps in strip form (I'd always wondered why she didn't cut it all into squares). Now it all makes sense! I can now turn those 2 1/2" strips into HST parts--with no waste.

I made the first block from above today--still loving the 30s repro fabric for this quilt.

  11. One inch HST's, I think the Farmer's wives were CRAZY! Are you counting the pieces so you have a tally at the end of the making your blocks? I'm amazed at how many pieces can fit into a 6.5" block.

  12. There's a couple of good blocks to use all those little HST that I sew before cutting because Bonnie said to. Thanks

  14. Help---- I don't know why I can't get this. I try adding everyhting to make sure it's going to come out at 6 1/2 unf. befor I cut. (made a few mistakes). The Sickle sq., the 3 1/2in. unf hst and the 2in. unf 4 patch do not add up to 6 1/2in. unf square. Please, what am I not getting. Thanks, Diana nuttinbutpostal@yahoo.com

    1. You're doing the math right. Two inch four patches should sew up to a finished size of 3.5 inches. Sewing that 3.5 inch four patch to the 3.5 inch hst gives you 6.5 inches unfinished or six inches finished size. Try making your seams just a little bit narrower if you're getting it smaller than that. See my post below.

  15. Help! I'm having the same difficulty as Diana on the Sickle block. The 2inch four patches are not big enough and I have extra pieces or not big enough pieces. Maybe the ingredients are wrong? I'll just set it aside until, there is some clairification. I did the two bonus and two of the bi weekly blocks done. I'm enjoying knowing that others are quilting along. Thanks Randy!!! 16. i don't think the strip sizes are right for the cut glass. if something finishes at 1 in, shouldn't it start as 1.5? am i reading that right or misunderstanding?

  17. My blocks started out too small too. You have to take into consideration what's called 'turn of cloth'. even though you think you have 1/4 inch on one side of the seam and 1.25 inches on the other, that seam takes up a little bit from each side so a tiny fraction is lost in the folding over of the seam. Mine were all coming out 6-3/8" or even 6.25". The more seams you have, the more apparent this gets. One inch finished hsts give you about 12 seams!! If you can, move the needle over just a click or two and make the seam slightly smaller than a quarter inch. Or put a guide on your sewing machine just inside the 1/4" point. OR make them all 6.25!! If you're consistently smaller they'll all be the same size anyway, right? LOL!

    2. Hi sue. Your blocks are lovely! I have a question - I only have instructions for 9 blocks, you have 15. Did I miss something? Very new to this, so I want to make sure I am following correctly.
      Thanks

  18. Took me reading it a half-dozen times, but I finally figured out the Sickle had an extra 4-patch in it.
