Bindings, bindings and more bindings

I am reluctant to admit that there is a part of quilting that I don't particularly care for. I can say it's my least favorite part.  That's doing bindings! UGH.

I'm getting my quilts ready to take to Oregon for the quilt show in Sisters on July 14th. I always try to sell something (helps pay for my fabric for a little while).  I had the quilts done plenty early this year. But the bindings?  Not exactly.

So I'm busy this week cutting bindings, sewing them end to end, sewing them on and then sewing them down. Remember I like to do it by machine? Well, that's still going on.

Is there a part of quilting that's your least favorite?? I'm curious to hear. Everyone has one aspect they don't like---and of course something they love best of all, but that's another blog post!

Love to you all,
Randy

  1. Basting and marking for hand quilting. That is my least favorite job. I LOVE doing bindings and I do them by hand. For me it's the last part of the process, the quilt warms me up while I take the final stitches....

    1. Sharon and I must be quilting twins. I also hate basting and marking, but I really enjoy doing the binding, and also do it by hand.

    2. I like the binding, too, because the quilt always looks different with that finished edge.

  2. I like piecing the tops, everything after that is not my favorite!

  3. I concur with all of the above. I love piecing the most--basting the least.

  4. I don't enjoy the quilting of the top but love the piecing. I guess that's why I have so many tops that aren't quilted.

  6. I would do your Bindings Gladly. Trade you for doing the corner stones and sashings part. I make blocks by the dozens but getting them to a Flimsy is a sticking point. I have a lot of stacks of blocks just waiting to be set together.

  8. The hardest part for me is deciding what quilting design I will quilt and then marking it. I love planning, buying fabric or using scraps, I love piecing, finishing flimsies and quilting. Binding is the fruit filling for me!! Of course when I am binding, I've got a several more ready to get done!!

    Blessings

  11. Well, I pretty much agree with you! I don't care for doing the bindings. I hand sew mine on. I have tried sewing them on by machine but they never come out very good.

  12. I am weird. I love cutting the fabric the best....piecing the blocks....but....once that is done, I HATE sewing the blocks into rows and sewing them together....and binding too! I have several that need to be sewn together and binding...they just sit, I hate that part...weird I know.

  13. I usually don't mind doing bindings but lately I DON"T , its because I have a pile of quilts that need bindings!
I am slowing working my way thru the pile...

sewing rows of quilts on point, but yet I keep making so many quilts that way!
    I hate sewing those rows!

have fun and hope they sell , add to that fabric budget!

  14. I used to hate doing bindings, but now I kind of like it (so maybe you will have a change of heart someday too!). I would agree with basting - that would be my least favorite part.

  15. I love the binding my favorite part of all. (Ok so I'm a little weird) I do not enjoy cutting out the pieces.

  16. I love doing the binding...that's my time to talk with God and sort things out and get back on track. I really don't think there's a part of quilting I don't like. Maybe just not having enough time to quilt as I used to. Dislike! Laura - ninepatch@hotmail.com

  17. A majority of my projects are doll quilts so there isn't alot of binding. However, my least favorite part is the binding.

  18. I don't mind bindings as much now as I used to, but I would have to agree with several others that basting is my least favorite thing. I have tried all different methods and my least favorite is on the floor, but I felt I had to baste my king size quilt on the floor, because the tables I use aren't big enough. Yesterday, I basted it on the floor and it was not a pretty site. I wore knee pads (which really helped) and crawled around pinning it. I recently spray basted a couple larger quilts and found it hard to do. I like it fine for small quilts. Good luck with the quilt show. I went last year and won't be able to go this year, but maybe next year I can go and I will try to sell a few quilts! Have you had very good luck selling them?

  21. That's my favorite part, sewing on the binding! But I have heard many quilters complain about it so you are not alone. I want to go to Sisters. I wonder if it's too late to make plan?!

  22. Basing is my least favorite. I also prefer everything about making the top to basting and quilting it. One problem is that I have no place to baste the quilts. I love picking the fabrics. Sharon

  23. I love piecing and getting the top completed. Then they sit sadly, waiting to be quilted. Mostly cause I do not have good quilting skills. Once they are quilted, I don't mind binding at all.

  24. Not wild about basting, especially if I have to crawl around on the floor (knees ache for a LONG time afterwards) but I really also dislike cutting everything out. I love, love, love the piecing part ... so much so that I want to race through everything else just to get to the piecing!!

  26. I get stuck on the laying of the bigger quilts. Ugh...And by the way...binding is my most favorite! It's really the only hand sewing that I do so I take my time with them and thoroughly enjoy it. Plus when I get finished the quilt is completely done and beautiful!
