Ebay acquisition - keep me away

I've been watching ebay recently to try to find a new (well, actually a used one) Bernina for Bonnie and happened to look at antique quilt tops.  OOPS.  I found one I couldn't live without.  Isn't this adorable??

I'm not sure why it looks kind of crooked, but it's really not. Bad photo I think.

Anyway, don't you love pinwheel blocks? They're so simple but have so much movement.  I need to make a quilt for Ryan's soon-to-be-preschool auction and was thinking of red/white/blue.  Maybe pinwheels would be a good idea.

Any suggestions?? I don't have too much time to do it so it can't be too complex.  I'd love to hear your ideas.

Hope everyone has a great Sunday.
Love to you all,
Randy

  1. I think pinwheels are always a good block to fall back on. Question for you...do you know anything about the Bernette model 60 machine? I have a friend who has one for sale but she doesn't know anything about it - hasn't really ever used it. I would like to help her sell it at some point.

  2. Oh what a sweet acquisition! I love pinwheels too and these are so cute! Love the many colors. Pinwheels would be perfect for a preschool audience!!!

  3. Pinwheels need to meet up in the center- all eight points! I'd find something else.

    Love your newest quilt addition!!

  4. Pinwheels are fun, I finished a pinwheel quilt in January, here is a link to my blog with a picture: http://sunshine-marsha.blogspot.com/2012/01/more-january-finishes.html You will have to look about half way through to see it. It was fun to make and the piecing finised fast. Mine is hand quilted, so that took a while but quilting by machine wouldn't take too long. Love the colors in your, too. Enjoy!

  5. I'm with Lori. The double four-patch that you donated to my daughter's fundraiser is a nice look without lots of technical stuff. Also, the picnic quilt that I just finished (see my latest post) goes together very quickly. I've made two from Kansas Trouble fabrics and was actually thinking it would look great in R/W/B, too.
I used to buy lots of vintage blocks on ebay. I think I have finally calmed that addiction--don't get me started again! : )

  6. You could do large pinwheels like 9 inch blocks and alternate them with plain blocks that would go quickly. How big a quilt are we talking about?
Red, white, and blue is always a crowd pleaser too.

  7. Red white and blue sounds like great colors. I think everyone likes pinwheels, but Lori has a point. The four patches and alternate blocks sound like a good plan for a quick quilt.

  8. I ran through a stretch of vintage quilt E-bay purchases a few years ago. Please do NOT ask me how many of the tops I've quilted, how many of the blocks I've made into tops, or how many of the bags of parts have been turned into anything resembling quilt blocks. (You can guess the answer.) It was a total bust for me. The top you bought looks great. Pinwheels are classic.

Colorful combinations of fabrics turned into cute 9-patch blocks are always fun to make into a quick quilt, alternating with squares.

  9. I would go with four patches alternated with either a plain block (which you could do some cool quilting in) or a fence rail as the alternate block (which will create a secondary design and make the quilt look more complicated than it is). I like pinwheels but points meeting are an issue. Red/white/blue is good but for a preschool quilt wouldn't you be better with more "child" like colors??

  10. I agree with the others. Pinwheels are not my favorite to make, probably because if the points don't meet it's pretty noticeable but I love them in quilts. Love the ebay quilt. That place is addicting and once I'm out there it takes way more time than I think it should.
One suggestion would be an alternating 9 or 4 patch with a rail fence block. Also I just made a 50th birthday quiilt for my husband using a panel. I then made some star blocks for two rows and found a companion fabric for borders and some stash for another border and it's done. Very quick, I think it took me less than a week to make and I'm not a fast quilter.

  11. Randy, here's another idea at fabrictherapy.blogspot.com. Teresa has a tutorial on a scrappy strip quilt that looks fast and easy. It would be a great stash buster too!

  12. I love pinwheels, especially for kids. And, I like to quilt them with an overall pattern that reminds me of wind. It adds even more movement to them. Love that top. Enjoy the new project. Lane

  13. How about a disappearing 9 patch? It goes fast and looks much harder than it is.

  14. Pinwheels always make a nice choice for children friendly quilts. I love whirly giggles too, they work up super quick and give a pinwheel effect with less bulky intersections.

  15. pinwheels are great to make and hey red white and blue would be good for a wide audience to bid!!!
maybe pinwheel with alternate block so no matching of seams :)
