    did it have a hive of bees still living inside?

  7. We had one of those--actually twice! We called the "Bee Man" who came well after dark all dressed in a special white suit and head gear. They sprayed the main hole to "cork" it up and prevent the hornets from leaving. Next they cut the hive down along with the branch it was attached to and placed it in a cooler. The "bee man" was going to sell the hive to a drug company. He actually only took hives that were "large" enough to be able to sell. By the time he came, ours were basketball sized--similar to the one you have pictured here. Ours were baldfaced hornets.

  9. Thst looks like the home of the bad part of plum cake and apple juice afternoons ...
    But then, they are essentially harmless. If there's a chance of kids going near it better do somethign about it, else leave it be.

  10. Of course it is a wasp nest. There is a saying that the higher and the bigger the nest the more snow we will get this winter.We found one on our farm here in Canada too.We will have to wait and see.
